SVA Music

Our music program offers students a wide range of opportunities to develop their talents and passion for music. Participation in all music organizations is by audition. Explore the various ensembles, courses, and private lesson options below.


Private Lessons

Private instrumental lessons are available for students at all levels, from beginner to advanced. Lessons are offered in piano, organ, voice, wind, string instruments, and percussion. Costs are arranged with the teacher.

  • Highly Recommended: Students involved in performance organizations and ensembles are encouraged to take private lessons.
  • Required in Some Cases: Private lessons may be necessary to join specific performance groups.
  • Flexible programs can be arranged with no credit, depending on the teacher.
Performance Ensembles

Concert Choir (1/4 Unit per Semester)

A choral ensemble focused on vocal and musical development. Students can join or drop at the semester.

  • Music Selection: High-quality and engaging repertoire suited to the group.
  • Membership: Open to all interested and qualified students.

Concert Band (1/4 Unit per Semester)

A wind band ensemble aimed at skill development and collaborative music-making.

  • Music Selection: Engaging and challenging pieces.
  • Membership: Open to students by semester; individual lessons recommended.

String Ensemble (1/4 Unit per Semester)

A dedicated group for string musicians seeking to enhance their skills.

  • Commitment: Membership is expected for the entire year.
  • Individual Lessons: Recommended for all participants.

Handbell Ensemble (1/2 Unit per Semester)

A select group performing advanced handbell music.

  • Commitment: Year-long membership and strict attendance required.
  • Eligibility: Based on musical ability, enthusiasm, and cooperation.

Symphony Orchestra (1/2 Unit per Semester)

Performs works from standard symphonic literature, including collaborations with the choir.

  • Membership: Core members include String Ensemble and selected Concert Band players; additional players welcome.
  • Skill Level: Proficiency required; individual lessons recommended and may be required.

Shenandoans (1/2 Unit per Semester)

A touring vocal ensemble for advanced choral music.

  • Repertoire: Primarily sacred music from all periods of choral history.
  • Membership: By audition/invitation; requires participation in Concert Choir and is re-evaluated quarterly.
Academic Courses

Music Appreciation I (1/2 Unit per Semester)

A comprehensive course covering the history of Western-Classical music, music theory, and various genres/styles.

  • Audience: Suitable for both experienced musicians and those fulfilling fine arts requirements.
  • Activities: Extensive listening, in-class writing/journaling, minimal take-home work.

Worship Ministry (1/2 Unit per Semester)

Prepares students for leadership in worship music.

  • Focus: Biblical framework for worship, developing talents for God’s glory.
  • Commitment: Includes practice time and participation in worship settings.
  • Goal: Build a humble, skilled worship team to enhance congregational praise.
